“Hopper House” – Come enjoy a bit of Carmel history! This very quiet and cozy 2 bedroom (King, King), 2.5 bath historical cottage exudes a peaceful, airy feel and is located just steps to town and within close proximity to the beach. Best of both worlds! The native Carmel stone cottage that is the hearth and heart of the Hopper House dates back to the early 1900s. The title deed shows that in 1910 James Hopper Jr. and Marion English Hopper were owners of the plot, which means that James was at the time an infant son of the writer Jimmie Hopper. A photograph on the wall, passed down through the family, shows Dr. James Hopper and his father Jimmie standing in front of the one room cottage in about 1930. In 1988, architect Wade H. Reese designed a two bedroom, 2.5 bath addition that preserved its historic character. With clean lines and a minimalist decorating style, this house truly is a classic Carmel gem! From the front door, walk in to a small foyer with powder room. To the left is the quaint living room with high vaulted ceiling, TV, leather sofa, loveseat and chairs, original Carmel stone wood burning fireplace, and French doors leading out to the back deck and garden. Straight ahead sits the dining area and kitchen, as well as the guest bedroom and bathroom. Dining area is light and spacious with a farmhouse table and French doors that also lead out to the back yard. Dining table seats 6 comfortably. The dining area also boasts a breakfast counter with two tall barstools. Kitchen opens to the dining area and is complete with white tile countertops, a gas range, dishwasher, garbage disposal and microwave. Guest bedroom off the kitchen and dining area has a King bed, French doors, TV, and en suite bathroom (tub/shower combo). Upstairs, guests can enjoy a private master bedroom with King bed, walk-in closet and en suite bathroom (tub/shower combo). Both bathrooms are predominately white tile with a floral motif. Hardwood floors throughout, except for the upstairs master bedroom and stairs which have new carpet. In 2005, the Hopper House was listed in the City of Carmel Historical Preservation record. Come walk in the footsteps of Jimmie Hopper and enjoy the rich Bohemian Carmel culture he shared with notables Mary Austin, George Sterling, Ambrose Bierce, Upton Sinclair, Jack London, and Robinson Jeffers. The cottage’s book shelves hold a collection of Hopper’s books, in addition to these other local authors. Don’t miss Sterling’s poem “Beyond the Breakers” that he dedicated to Hopper! Parking is available in the one car garage, as well as in the driveway. Premium cable. Washer/Dryer in laundry room. Wi-Fi. Small pet negotiable. NO SMOKING. 30 NIGHT MINIMUM. PROPERTY CODE: HOPPR
